  • Autopilot: Google manages provisioning, upgrades, and OS entirely hands-off, billed per-pod resource consumption — the default choice absent a specific reason for Standard's extra control. Standard: you manage node pools and machine types directly, billed for full VM capacity whether used or idle — needed for privileged containers, custom node OS images, or elevated node access Autopilot doesn't allow.
  • The 2026 hybrid option lets a Standard cluster opt specific workloads into an Autopilot ComputeClass while the rest of the cluster keeps hand-managed node pools — this ends the old forced choice where one specialized workload's needs pushed an entire cluster into Standard's full operational overhead.
  • Tie to the cost comparison later in this chapter: Standard becomes cheaper only above roughly 60-70% sustained utilization — below that crossover point, Autopilot's per-pod billing wins even though it looks like the 'more managed, should cost more' option.
