Cloud Storage classes and lifecycle management

Five storage classes trade access latency and retrieval cost against storage price, and Autoclass automates the choice when the access pattern isn't already well understood.

Speaker notes

  • Standard fits frequently-accessed data with no retrieval cost; Nearline (30-day minimum), Coldline (90-day), and Archive (365-day) trade increasing minimum-duration commitments for cheaper storage and higher retrieval cost as access frequency drops.
  • Autoclass is a bucket-level feature, not a class itself — it automatically migrates objects between the four classes based on real access patterns within about 24 hours of a pattern change, with no early-deletion fee for its own automatic transitions.
  • The one hard constraint: manual lifecycle rules and Autoclass are mutually exclusive on the same bucket. Choose manual rules only when a compliance requirement dictates an exact minimum-duration timing Autoclass's automatic behavior can't guarantee — everything else defaults to Autoclass.
