Cloud Run revisions, traffic splitting, and functions

Every deploy creates a new immutable revision with zero traffic until explicitly assigned — the mechanism that makes canary rollouts and instant rollback both possible.

  • Cloud Run runs a stateless container behind an HTTPS endpoint, scaling automatically including to zero, with no cluster or Kubernetes API to manage — the far end of the shared-responsibility spectrum from Compute Engine. min-instances=1 is a deliberate choice to avoid a cold start on a customer-facing path, not a default.
  • Traffic assignment is a separate, explicit step from deployment — a new revision can be deployed with --no-traffic and a canary tag, then shifted 10% at a time, then rolled back instantly by reassigning traffic back to the previous revision with no redeploy required.
  • Cloud Run functions (replacing the older Cloud Functions branding) share this exact revision and traffic-splitting model, connecting to over 90 event sources through Eventarc — a team fluent in Cloud Run deployment safety doesn't have to relearn it for functions.
