Workload Identity Federation

External workloads exchange their own platform's native identity for a short-lived GCP token — no GCP key file ever exists in the flow.

  • WIF for external workloads lets a CI/CD pipeline or another cloud's workload present its own OIDC token to Google's Security Token Service, which verifies it against a configured Workload Identity Pool provider and returns a federated token — the trust boundary is the external issuer, not a GCP secret GitHub would have to store.
  • WIF for GKE (the historical 'Workload Identity' name, no 'Federation') is the same token-exchange concept scoped to a Kubernetes ServiceAccount inside a specific namespace impersonating a GCP service account — application code inside a Pod never handles a GCP credential directly.
  • Both mechanisms share the same underlying payoff as impersonation from the previous slide: no long-lived GCP secret ever has to be stored, rotated, or protected as its own artifact — this should be the default choice for any new automated, unattended workload.
