Ch 5 · GKE & Serverless
2026 update

The 2026 hybrid ends the all-or-nothing GKE choice.

Most workloads want Autopilot's simplicity; a few need Standard's control — no longer forcing the whole cluster to pick one.

Autopilot

Google manages nodes entirely. Per-pod billing. Default for new clusters.

Standard

Full node control. Full VM cost. Needed for privileged containers, custom node images.

Hybrid ComputeClass

One Standard cluster, specific workloads opt into Autopilot-managed nodes.

A team mid-migration found Autopilot doesn't support a privileged DaemonSet — a hard platform limitation. The hybrid option now makes this discovery far less costly to hit.
