Three repository modes, and scanning stops at the virtual layer

Standard, remote, and virtual repositories serve different roles — and vulnerability scanning does not run inside a virtual repository itself.

  • Standard stores your own pushed artifacts. Remote proxies and caches an upstream public registry (Docker Hub, PyPI, npm), adding caching plus a scan point for cached packages. Virtual unifies several standard/remote repos behind one URL with priority ordering, guarding against dependency confusion.
  • State the limitation plainly, since it's a genuinely easy-to-miss exam and production trap: Artifact Analysis does NOT scan inside a virtual repository itself — scanning happens only at the underlying standard/remote repos it unifies.
  • The practical check this drives: if a pipeline pulls dependencies exclusively through a virtual repo's single URL, confirm the underlying repos it unifies actually have scanning enabled individually — a virtual repo can give a false sense of coverage otherwise.
