  • Six trigger types: push to branch, pull request, tag push, manual, webhook, Pub/Sub — each with a distinct role. Push and PR triggers are the two used constantly; the others solve more specific integration needs.
  • Tell the real incident: a trigger fired on push to ANY branch, intended as a convenience. A contractor pushed forty commits to an experimental branch in one afternoon while debugging locally, and forty full builds burned through the monthly Cloud Build budget in a single day, pushing forty untagged images into the shared registry along the way.
  • The fix costs one line of trigger configuration: a branch-name regex filter (^main$, ^release/.*$) on push triggers that build and push artifacts, reserving pull-request triggers — which can test without pushing anything — for feature-branch coverage.
