Built-in substitutions are automatic; user-defined ones need an underscore

Cloud Build fills in $PROJECT_ID and $SHORT_SHA automatically; a custom $_REGION must be declared explicitly.

Speaker notes

  • Built-in substitutions ($PROJECT_ID, $SHORT_SHA, $COMMIT_SHA, $BRANCH_NAME, $TRIGGER_NAME) resolve automatically from the triggering event with zero declaration needed. User-defined substitutions must start with an underscore ($_REGION) and are declared in the substitutions block or overridden per-trigger.
  • State the tagging rule directly, since it's one of the highest-value habits in this whole course: always tag a built image with $SHORT_SHA, never latest — an image tagged latest gives you no way to answer 'which commit is actually running in production' during a real incident.
  • This is a small mechanical detail with an outsized payoff — the substitution syntax itself is trivial, but the discipline of tagging by commit SHA is what makes an incident response fast instead of a guessing exercise.
