  • This blueprint is the single strongest artifact to have ready from the entire course: walk it stage by stage — pre-commit secret scan, PR-time SAST/SCA/IaC scanning, an isolated ephemeral build, container image scanning, SBOM generation, signing and provenance, DAST against staging, an admission policy gate verifying the signature and SBOM, deploy with least-privilege credentials, and runtime monitoring — naming the specific tool category and the specific threat each stage addresses.
  • The real-world attacks table matters because it shows supply chain compromise isn't one shape: xz-utils (2024) was a patiently-built maintainer identity turned insider threat over two years; event-stream (2018) was a maintainer handing control to an unvetted volunteer; the Codecov Bash Uploader (2021) was an unpinned `curl | bash` script modified to exfiltrate CI secrets; ua-parser-js (2021) was a compromised maintainer account publishing directly to the registry.
  • The xz-utils case deserves particular emphasis: it demonstrates that a sufficiently patient, socially-engineered attacker can compromise the assumption every other control in this module depends on — that the build process itself is trustworthy — which is exactly why SLSA's higher build-track levels specifically emphasize a hardened, isolated build platform that can't be influenced even by someone with legitimate-looking commit access.
