  • Secret scanning is shift-left applied specifically to credentials: a pre-commit hook running gitleaks or a similar tool catches a hardcoded key locally, in seconds, before it's ever pushed — CI-level scanning is a second, defense-in-depth layer catching anything that bypasses the local hook. TruffleHog's verification feature is worth naming specifically: it can check whether a flagged credential is actually still live against the real provider API, which dramatically cuts the false-positive rate that would otherwise cause exactly the alert-fatigue problem covered elsewhere in this course.
  • The response runbook is worth having memorized in order, because the order itself is the lesson: rotate immediately — don't investigate first. A common but wrong instinct is to spend time determining whether the secret was actually misused before rotating, but every minute it remains valid is a minute an attacker (who may have found it completely independent of your own discovery) can use it.
  • The closing step matters as much as the first: a blameless postmortem asking why automated scanning didn't catch this before a human found it — treating the gap as systemic, exactly mirroring the culture pillar from Module 1, applied here to a security incident specifically.
