Release channels trade feature freshness for observation time
Autopilot clusters are always enrolled in a release channel. Standard uses channels by default; opting out is discouraged and limits access to some features.
| Channel | Intent | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid | Earlier access to newer GKE versions | You validate quickly and accept faster change |
| Regular | Balanced default cadence | Most production platforms |
| Stable | More observation before rollout | Change-sensitive workloads prioritizing maturity |
| Extended | Longer minor-version support with additional fees in extended support | Upgrade windows need more time for valid reasons |
A channel chooses what arrives; maintenance policy controls when eligible maintenance can occur.
