Autopilot is the default answer until a requirement proves otherwise
Start with workload needs, not habit. Most stateless and many stateful production workloads fit Autopilot; Standard is for infrastructure control or unsupported constraints.
1Need Kubernetes? If no, a simpler managed runtime may fit better.
2Need node control?Kernel modules, privileged agents or exact node lifecycle point to Standard.
3Need special hardware?Check Autopilot compute classes first; specific hardware can use node-based billing.
4Need mixed control?Standard can run Autopilot workloads through ComputeClasses.
5Choose deliberatelyRecord the requirement that justifies Standard's extra ownership.
Treat Standard as an explicit control requirement, not the mature-looking option.
