Plan upgrades inside the 14-month standard window to avoid paying for extended support.

A Kubernetes minor version released on EKS gets about 14 months of standard support and then 12 months of extended support at a higher cluster price.

Cadence beats heroics

Kubernetes ships roughly three minors a year. Upgrading one or two minors every few months is routine; skipping five is a project.

Cost of waiting

Standard support costs a fraction of extended per cluster-hour. For many clusters the premium is real money. Check the current EKS pricing page.

Skew rules apply

Upgrade the control plane one minor at a time. Nodes may lag the control plane within the supported skew, but never lead it.
